Mila Kunis walks the fine line between friendship and romance

There are some lines you just never cross.

In the new movie “Friends with Benefits,” Mila Kunis (“Black Swan”) and Justin Timberlake (“The Social Network”) try to negotiate the complicated avenues when two friends become involved. Kunis plays Jamie, a headhunter in a leading job agency that befriends one of her assets, Timberlake’s character, Dylan—a hotshot young art director for an LA-based Internet company being recruited by GQ magazine in New York. Soon enough, they develop a friendship that led to them being physically intimate. However, both agree they are only doing so with the clear mind that they won’t get attached to—and develop romantic feelings for—each other.

Billed as a rom-com, the story nevertheless raises a very real question—whether men and women can really be friends.Kunis points out, “I have many male friends that I have no desire of becoming intimate with, and I am sure they feel the same way. I strongly believe that the opposite sex can be your friend without anything happening.”

But no matter what people say about this theory, human emotions do get in the way, in ways people don’t expect or think they can avoid. Sex and friendship really is a complicated game to play.

Kunis considers this and notes, “I agree with Justin when he says that it is probably a really good idea until it becomes a really bad one. And as a woman, I think it could leave you in a very delicate and dangerous position.”

Especially women who are trying not to get hurt again, like Jamie, whom Kunis describes as, “a 20-something-year-old who is trying to figure out her life and who she is. Her heart has been broken multiple times, so she probably has some trust issues. I think Jamie is just figuring herself out, like most women her age today.”

There are a good number of women that can relate to what Jamie is going through, and Kunis plays her as a strong but sensitive woman, broken but still open to life’s possibilities—perhaps even more so than the man that has entered her life. And for a character that hits quite close to home, her relationship with Timberlake behind the scenes has become the key to their onscreen chemistry.

But it wasn’t like they had a real history before this movie, although that was hardly evident in the end product. “I had met him before, although I hardly knew him,” Kunis relates. “But, as we were given the opportunity to work for three months on the script, we soon became friends and got to know each other before the shoot.”

Kunis says it does help to be friends with co-actors, “but that isn’t very common,” she reveals. And while they managed to remain friends after the production, she also notes, “That also doesn’t normally happen.”

But while working on the film, Kunis reiterates the need to “feel comfortable with your partner in crime,” especially in some scenes that require them to be uninhibited. “You want to know there is a safety net underneath you in case you make a mistake—which you will—and that there is someone there to pick you up. And, in that sense, I couldn’t have felt more comfortable than with Justin because we were in the same boat together.”

A self-confessed fan of rom-coms, her favorite being “Pretty Woman,” Kunis reveals going through a different process for this movie—one that involved her being more than just the actor in front of the camera.

“The whole script ended up being worked on for a period of two or three months prior to production. Justin, [writer-director] Will Gluck and I would get together and work on the dialogue and the characters scene by scene until we made them what we wanted them to be and have their reactions being what we saw them being,” she shares.

“I have never done a movie before in which I was involved in the whole process, even when I was attached early to it; but this time I was there when we rewrote everything for months and months. It has been really different from what I have experienced before and really rewarding and refreshing. That's why I said yes.”

And she adds, “Then, of course, I wanted to work with Justin...”

Whoever coined the phrase from which the premise of this movie is based must not have considered the plethora of complications it brings. See for yourself as “Friends with Benefits” opens nationwide on Sept. 28.

'I didn't like Friends with Benefits at first'

Mila Kunis has admitted that she did not like her new movie Friends with Benefits when she first read the script.

The Black Swan star revealed that her recent sex comedy, which also stars Justin Timberlake, had to be extensively reworked in order to prevent it from feeling "dated".

"When I got the script, it was very dated, but I knew it made for a funny movie so I took a meeting with [director] Will Gluck," she told Stylist. "Will, Justin and myself went out to dinner and that's when we realised we wanted the same thing for the movie.

"We were able to workshop it, rewrite the script and tailor the characters to what we feel our generation is like now."

Kunis was also not entirely satisfied with the prospect of undressing for the film's numerous intimate scenes. "I didn't have any problem with Justin taking his clothes off," she jested with The Daily Telegraph. "But I'm incredibly insecure about my figure in my private life, let alone in front of 50 crew members. There was a lot of insecurity.

"There were awkward moments, but the great thing was that Justin and I were friends, so at least I was with someone I knew who was also uncomfortable."

Kunis has said that she finds her sex symbol status to be "fantastic".

“Nope, wasn’t tempted,” says Mila defiantly, despite the way they playfully groped each other while presenting an MTV award.“If you’re friends with someone, let’s just leave it at that. There needs to be nothing more.”

Mila is currently single after breaking up from her boyfriend of eight years, Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin.

She was born in the Ukraine, moving to LA when she was seven. Her parents enrolled her in after-school drama lessons to help her learn English and by the age of nine she was appearing in adverts and TV shows. At 14 she joined the cast of the comedy That ’70s Show.

She also voices Meg in the animation Family Guy and has appeared in The Book Of Eli and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. That’s where Darren Aronofsky spotted her and offered her the role in Black Swan, without an audition.

“For one reason or another, he trusted me hugely. I didn’t want to ask him, I just went with it,” she laughs.

If Angelina Jolie ever needed an understudy, she might find one in the form of rising star Mila Kunis.

Last night the Black Swan actress stepped out looking like the Hollywood A-lister's doppelgänger at a New York red carpet event.

The 27-year-old star dressed demurely in a white trouser suit which looked strikingly similar to one worn by Angelina back in 2009 at the premiere of her partner Brad Pitt's movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Like the Lara Croft star, Mila has also taken on action roles, namely in the 2010 movie The Book of Eli, and played a younger version of Jolie in her 1998 film Gia.

And over recent months, as she has seen her profile bolstered by the success of her latest movie, Mila has been favourably compared to Jolie.

With their full lips, wide eyes and high cheek bones, it's not hard to see why.

In a recent interview, 27-year-old Mila described the comparison to 35-year-old Jolie as 'absurd', but added that she wouldn't argue with it.

'I'm like, "Dude, thank you. Really? You truly believe that? You need glasses or contacts",' she told the Ministry of Gossip website at a recent Hollywood dinner.

Kunis kept it low-key as well, chatting with Emmanuelle Chriqui on the terrace for most of the evening.

Vulture reports Black Swan actress Mila Kunis, 27, has walked away from the Hughes Brothers-directed live-action '80s remake Akira in favor of the Oz film.

The film’s director, Sam Riami, and James Franco reportedly approached Kunis to play Theodorah, the younger sister of Evanorah, who eventually becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.MTV reports that after a meeting with Kunis, she was deemed perfect for the part, which made Franco officially accept an offer to star in the film.

The two stars’ involvement in the film has yet to be confirmed, however. There is also little known about the plot, except that it is a prequel to the original 1939 film.

127 Hours actor Franco will play the part of a young illusionist with a grandiose attitude - a role previously attached to Robert Downey Jr and Johnny Depp.

In the plot the character is forced to flee a traveling circus. His hot air balloon is swept up by a tornado to the land of Oz, which is run by two magical wicked witches, one of which is Kunis' character.

Nymag.com reports that Kunis chose Raimi's movie over the Hughes' brothers' forthcoming live-action remake of 1988 Manga movie Akira. It was rumoured that Franco would appear in that remake too.

Franco and Kunis previously worked together in 2010's Date Night, playing the criminal couple who Steve Carell and Tina Fey are confused with.

She lost 20 pounds, tore a ligament, dislocated a shoulder and trained for several months. But when Mila Kunis, star of Black Swan, recalls her injuries she quickly adds, “And it was worth every minute.”

In a recent interview with W Magazine (via The Huffington Post), the edgy ballerina says training for the movie resulted in several bruises. She recalls, “I had never danced in my life. I trained for four months, seven days a week, five hours a day. I had one day off on my birthday.”

Although she admits it was worth every minute, she adds,”But I will never dance again. I’m a strong believer in mind over matter, but I didn’t fully understand what that meant until this production.”

"A black man," she says in the new issue of W magazine. "It was at the American embassy, and all I had known were Caucasian people with blond hair, brunette hair, and sometimes red hair. You're never really taught about anything else. I think I was frightened. And the beautiful thing was, the man spoke Russian. He explained to me that there are people in this world who are of different color. Being seven and a half, I asked him, 'Does that mean there are purple people in this world?'"She did not grow up being told she was beautiful.

"It's not that I was raised to think I was unattractive, but it was just never something that was pointed out to me by my family. They would point out personality traits—'Our daughter is really quirky'—versus what I look like, because inevitably, looks go, so it makes no difference."

And she always thought college was her career goal.

"I didn't really think of acting as a career. I'm the first person in my family to not be a college graduate. I always associate careers with college diplomas. When I was 22, my contract with That '70s Show ended, and I had to make a conscious decision about what I wanted to do with my life.

"During the show, I had attempted to go to college, but I realized that the traffic in L.A. made it too difficult for me to go to school at 6 a.m. and be back at work at 10 a.m. I asked my parents if it was okay if I dropped out. They said okay, you can defer until after your contract with That '70s Show ends. And then it ended.

"I realized for the first time that I couldn't imagine doing anything else. So I had to make acting a career— to make smart choices instead of choices made for fun."

The stunning actress landed a part in hit lesbian ballet thriller Black Swan by just having a handful of video meetings with director DARREN ARONOFSKY.

She said: "It was the first movie I didn't have to audition for. I was absolutely shocked. But I never questioned Darren about why he cast me. I didn't want him second-guessing it." And director Aronofsky, who worked on the film's concept for 10 years, made his mind up right away after seeing Mila in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

He said: "I just thought, Who is that girl? So charming and beautiful and sexy and smart and clever. There was so much going on."

Boot Camp is a 2007 psychological suspense thriller feature film written by Agatha Dominik and John Cox and directed by Christian Duguay.

This film is the story of a group of unruly teenagers whose parents send them to a rehabilitation Boot camp (correctional) to turn them around. The camp collects each child individually, then delivers them to the boot camp facility on a remote island in Fiji. There are no walls to stop the teenagers from leaving, but escape is impractical due to the surrounding sea. On arriving at the camp, the teenagers are forced to wear cuffs with sensors around their ankles — if they attempt to escape, security will be alerted.

Dr. Hail (Peter Stormare), who runs the camp, forces the teens to work constantly. He has them clean the camp, grow plants, and has them rebuild the camp after it was damaged in a storm. Campers are required to wear color coded t-shirts. First, new arrivals are given black t-shirts. They progress to yellow and then white. The teens earn a white shirt once they have been "corrected." They do not do work; they become staff members and abuse the other inmates and monitor their work. Among the staff is an ex-Army recruit. He is very tough towards the inmates and makes deals with girls in exchange for sex.

It turns out that what their parents believe is a state-of-the-art deluxe institution in a beautiful natural environment turns out to be a prison-like boot camp where they are abused and brainwashed by their environment.

The film's working title was Straight Edge and was shot in Fiji as the first film to utilize the southwest Pacific Ocean island country's five-year-old incentive program that had been designed to create jobs while building a film production infrastructure.

Choi Jung-in of South Korea's JoongAng Daily wrote, "From the outset, director Christian Duguay makes it clear that "Boot Camp" is based on true events." "...I loved Duguay's message that children should never be abused under the pretext of parental love".

Actress Mila Kunis enjoyed a tour of some of America's lost towns while making her new movie Moving McAlister - no one she knew had heard of the locations. The former That 70's Show star admits she fell in love with the quaint charms of tiny towns like Delta, Utah and Molasses Junction, Florida.

She tells Parade.com, "I saw some really odd places that no one has ever heard of that were awesome to visit. These little towns are like characters all in their own. I met the nicest group of people I've ever met in Molasses Junction. This town maybe had a population of 75. It had one building that was the post office, a restaurant, a grocery store, a convenience store, a pharmacy and a gas station."

"We were there in the middle of hunting season and they were all so welcoming - they were like, 'We will treat you guys to a dinner.' We were like, 'You realize we're 150 people?' And they were like, 'No problem.'"
